What Is Family Medicine?
Family medicine is a medical specialty trained specifically to treat patients of any age — from infants to seniors — rather than focusing on one life stage or one body system. Where a pediatrician sees only children and an internist sees only adults, a family medicine provider is trained across the full spectrum, which is what makes it possible for one doctor to see every member of a household.
That breadth matters in practice. A family medicine visit might cover a toddler's vaccination schedule in the morning, and a grandparent's blood pressure check in the afternoon — the same provider, the same clinic, the same continuity of care that primary care is built around, just applied across generations instead of a single age group.

PEDIATRIC CARE
Well-Child Visits & Checkups
Well-child visits track a child's growth, development, and overall health at regular intervals from infancy through the teenage years. These visits are scheduled even when a child isn't sick, since much of what's being monitored — growth curves, developmental milestones, age-appropriate screening — is easiest to catch through a consistent visit schedule rather than a one-time appointment.
A typical well-child visit includes measurements (height, weight, and other growth indicators), a physical exam, a review of developmental milestones appropriate to your child's age, and a conversation about nutrition, sleep, and behavior. Vaccinations are often given at these same visits, based on the recommended childhood immunization schedule.
ACUTE CARE
Sick Visits
Not every illness needs a wait-and-see approach or an urgent care trip. Family medicine sick visits cover common illnesses — colds, ear infections, sore throats, stomach bugs, and similar everyday concerns — for patients of any age, seen by a provider who already knows your or your child's medical history.
A provider who already knows your child's asthma history, or your own medication list, can evaluate a new symptom with important context from your existing medical history.

PREVENTIVE CARE
Vaccinations & Immunizations
Vaccination schedules differ significantly by age — a child's recommended immunization schedule looks nothing like an adult's booster and age-appropriate vaccination needs. Family medicine providers are trained to manage both ends of that spectrum, tracking what's due, what's been given, and what's recommended based on age and health conditions.
SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS
School & Sports Physicals
Many schools and youth sports leagues require a physical exam before a student can enroll or play. These visits confirm your child is medically cleared for the activity, checking vitals, growth, and any conditions that might affect participation, and typically involve completing whatever form your school or league requires.
